5 String banjo ‘The Special XX” by Clifford Essex-£1500

A gorgeous old English banjo, once owned by the legendary Martin Simpson.

Dating from the 1920s, the ‘Special XX’, later rebadged as the ‘Concert Grand’, was a top of the range instrument made by The Clifford Essex company. This one has a rosewood neck, ebony fingerboard and peghead overlay, and mother of pearl inlays.

It’s in excellent condition both structurally and cosmetically, and is playing beautifully. It’s currently fitted with a modern Remo two-ply ‘fibreskyn’ head, which is giving it a warmer, darker tone.

This banjo was owned for many years by the legendary British guitarist and banjo player Martin Simpson, who had the instrument set up by ‘Flatfoot’ Johnny Deller. He passed it on to another great guitarist, Jon Wilks, who had it for a while before asking me to sell it on his behalf.

All in all, a very special instrument with a prestigious provenance.

Comes in a hard case.
